An award-winning student artist from North Buncombe Elementary School has earned another honor.
Fourth grader Ellis Gibson won first place in the elementary division of the 18th Young Artist Competition, sponsored by the Professional Educators of North Carolina (PENC). His creation was submitted by art teacher Kourtney Yelton.
Each year since 2008, PENC has selected winning entries from elementary, middle, and high school submissions. The goal of this competition is to highlight the hard work of North Carolina’s visual art teachers, classroom teachers that integrate art into their classrooms, and their students.
Last spring, Ellis won first place in the intermediate division of the NCDOT Aviation Art Contest. That award-winning piece showed skydivers holding a quilt of different flags from around the world, to match the theme “Air Sports in a Peaceful World”.
