News & Supply List

Dear Parents,

I want to welcome you and your child to fourth grade!  To help get things organized for this school year, I need to share some information with you.  If you haven’t already, please look over the information included in the NBES folder sent home at “Meet the Teacher” and return any needed forms promptly.  (Students will receive a 100% in each subject to start off their year if the papers are returned on Monday!!)

Our school day is from 8:00 – 2:25. Car riders go to the theater at 2:35, and they must be picked up by 3:00If you want your child to go home in a way other than his/her usual way in the afternoon, we must have a note from you.  All notes should include: child’s name, date, teacher’s name and room #. Bus changes must include the bus number and the address where your child will be dropped off.  This information is required on notes before we turn them into the office.  Children sometimes get confused, so please understand we cannot change a child’s routine plans without a note.  If a change occurs during the school day, please call the office.

Please keep tardies and early dismissals to a minimum.  Parents of car riders should not wait in the lobby to pick up their children, but should wait in the car rider line.  Your child will be called from the theater beginning at 2:35. This will help alleviate a “traffic jam” as we get each child in the right place in the afternoons.

Breakfast will be offered to all students free of charge again this year. Please make sure your child is at school on time if he/she needs to eat at school.

My sole means of communicating will be through the REMIND app.  If you have not already signed up, please do so ASAP.  I will send announcements and reminders through this rather than sending home a Newsletter.  If you need to contact me, you can send me a text through this app as well; it is private.  It is a great way to keep in touch.  During our trip to Raleigh, I send updates to let you know how we are doing as well as some pictures so you can see what we are up to.

You can also email me at

*The REMIND app and an email are the best ways to get in touch with me.  Phone calls are usually not transferred to the classroom and I sometimes don’t get to my mailbox until the end of the day.  If we have meetings or other obligations, I might not be able to return your call until the next morning.  However, I can usually respond to a text or email within a day.

If your child takes medication at school, it must be brought in by you.  A medication form must be completed by your child’s doctor.  For safety reasons, children are not allowed to bring their medicine to school.

Please dress your child comfortably for school.  Please no hats, “belly shirts”, short shorts, bandanas, or spaghetti straps.  Tie shoes are better for running than clogs or flip flops. Tennis shoes are a must for days we have P.E. (Monday).

We will have a working snack each day.  Each child must bring his/her own nutritious snack and water.  The students will be eating snack at their desk while we continue learning. We need to have water to avoid stains to the carpet and to avoid ants. This is healthier for your child anyway.

Being a parent myself, I know the importance of family time every evening. Therefore, we will read each night for 20 minutes and have a reading response spiral notebook.  Any other homework will only consist of work your child did not finish during the school day with an extra assignment sent home at random. Therefore, it's up to your child to work hard during class every day to prevent extra work at home. It is my hope you spend your evenings doing things that are truly important in the success of children; eating dinner as a family, reading together, playing outside, and getting your child to bed early.

Your child will also have a planner that they will write dates and important upcoming information in each day. THIS IS THEIR RESPONSIBILITY.  Please sign the planner each night indicating that you have seen it and your child did their nightly reading.  Each morning I will check the planner. You may also write me notes in the planner and I may write you a note as well.  This is a great way to stay in touch as we will all be signing daily/nightly.

In fourth grade, our students are very experienced with basic rules of the school. Our expectations are very high and hopefully behavior will not be an issue with your child. We will be using an Economic System in our class for behavior.  Students will be given deposits for positive behavior and withdrawals for negative behavior. They will be able to earn money to buy rewards (ex. sit at teacher desk for the day, lunch in the room, lunch with a friend, rent chair pads, etc.)  They will also be renting items such as their desks with their money. This system will not only enforce good behavior, but students will be learning about money and the importance of saving and using their money wisely.

As you probably already know, 4th graders take a day trip to Raleigh each year.  It typically costs around $80.  This is a fun and educational trip that students will never forget!  More information will be given to you by your child’s 4thgrade teacher in the fall.

Your help and cooperation in getting your child’s 4th grade year off to a great start is greatly appreciated!  I am so excited to be working with your child!
