The Principal and the Pea

North Buncombe Elementary School Principal Deborah DeVane is retiring - but the students made sure to give her a going away she won’t forget.

North Buncombe Elementary students put on a musical production of the “Principal and the Pea” - a short musical theater show about students at a school looking for a new principal and devising a plan to select one based on the fairytale “The Princess and the Pea.”

“Our school has had a long legacy of having students perform on stage,” said music teacher Brandy Minnix. “It is a chance for them to use their imagination, to be part of something bigger than themselves and to experience that everyone's contribution counts. It never fails that at least one student finds a love for performing and pursues opportunities outside of school like joining the Community Theater.”

The school theater was packed with teachers, students, and parents as they performed. Ms. DeVane was in attendance, but was unaware of the theme of the play - the students surprised her with a dedication and flowers before the show.

“Mrs. DeVane was surprised and pleased,” said Ms. Minnix. “She has not stopped talking about it, which warms my heart that the students and I could be a part of that memory for her.”
