Is my child gifted?
Students

All children are gifted in some way. They might learn to play an instrument early, have the ability to memorize street signs at a young age, be intensely empathetic and concerned for world issues, or be athletic and gifted in a sport....the possibilities are endless.

AIG programming in our schools serves students who are academically or intellectually gifted.  We don't test  or place students for music ability, physical ability, or creativity in art. So keep in mind as you ponder whether your child is gifted that he/she is certainly gifted in some way - but our AIG program will focus on academic and intellectual giftedness.

Our first screening for AIG is in 3rd grade, usually the first semester. We administer a screening to all 3rd graders in Buncombe County. It is the CogAT - a test widely used for screening for gifted programs. If your child scores well above average on this test (above 93%ile), he/she will then be tested for achievement in Reading and Math. While the CogAT is an aptitude screening, the achievement testing in Reading and Math help us determine if your child is above his/her peers in those subjects. Along with these tests, your child's teacher will fill out a nomination form and you might be contacted if we need further information or testing.

Once an evaluation is complete, we have an Academically/Intellectually Gifted Identification Team who will meet to determine if a child demonstrates a need for AIG services. At that point, a Differentiated Education Plan is generated. Parents are notified and come in for a conference to discuss the testing results, the AIG curriculum, and any questions or concerns from parents.

One of the best things about our schools is that there are students of all ability levels and gifts!  Your child, whether he/she is in the AIG program or not, is in very good company with the best tools for growing, learning, and succeeding!
